Why employers should promote car sharing

November 15th, 2021

Company cars were once seen as a major perk of any job, but their use now seems to be in decline.

Whether due to environmental concerns or changing working habits, last year HMRC reported 30,000 fewer people receiving the benefit.

Company cars have traditionally been used by people in roles where they need to drive significant distances for work, such as salespeople or area managers.

However, an alternative, especially now, as a workforce, we’re driving less, could be a car sharing club – here’s why it could work for you.

There when you need it

Thanks to the pandemic, many people are still working from home, or at least for some of the time. Additionally, now we’re all used to the technology, many meetings are now held virtually, meaning employees no longer need to drive around the country.

However, when employees do need to drive, they may not want to use their own vehicle for a variety of reasons.

With the Co Wheels car-sharing club, you can pick up the tab for your employee while they get use of a reliable, taxed and fully-serviced vehicle. We have hundreds of cars across the country based around 45 locations, and you can drive away in as little as 15 minutes from booking.

Better for the environment

Using a car club gets everyone thinking about their car usage; if a vehicle is not waiting in the car park, it’s natural to think about the alternatives.

If you give your staff access to a car during the day, some may be able to commute to work by public transport or by foot, freeing up valuable parking space and reducing congestion.

Additionally, car club cars tend to be relatively newer models, which have fewer harmful emissions and are more efficient; at Co Wheels, we even have hybrid and fully electric cars on offer.

With a car club, unlike a company car, there’s no tax to worry about or HMRC to deal with; what you see is what you get.

So much choice

With a company car, you pick a car and it has to suit all eventualities. With a car club, you have your choice of makes and models, meaning you always have the ideal vehicle for the job.

A local meeting? All you need is a micro car. Lots of colleagues travelling together? Take advantage of one of our seven-seaters. Maybe you’ve got supplies or samples to deliver – in that case, we even have vans available.

Cost effective

With a car club, unlike a company car, there’s no tax to worry about or HMRC to deal with; what you see is what you get.

At Co Wheels, we charge a one-off joining fee and that’s it – from then on, you just pay for what you use.

Prices start from as little as £4.75 per hour and 18p a mile for a micro car, or you can try out an electric vehicle from £5.50, with free mileage.

Be part of a community

With the Co Wheels car club, not only are you hiring a car; you’re joining a community of like-minded individuals. With members up and down the UK, it’s a cheap and convenient way to use a car, while saving money and doing your bit for the environment.

So, you want to do your bit for the environment by getting rid of your car – but how will you get around?Walking or cycling everywhere is a nice idea but not particularly practical in reality, and neither is relying on lifts from family and friends.
