Poole Car Club Goes Electric!
January 6th, 2025
There’s great news for residents and businesses in Poole with the introduction of two brand new electric Car Club vehicles.
The new electric cars can be hired through the Co Wheels community car club and are conveniently situated right in Poole Town Centre.
Both cars are fully electric MG4s and are available at Poole Railway Station (directly under Towngate Bridge) and Lagland Street, for easy access from the High Street and nearby housing.
Co Wheels is a pay-as-you-go community car hire scheme, where members can hire vehicles from locations across the UK. The cars are easily booked online and unlocked without the need for keys. At the end of the booking, the car back is returned back into its bay by the user.
It’s a great way to try an electric car and is a brilliant cost-effective alternative to car (or second car) ownership. Insurance, servicing and charging is included, and cars can be booked for as little as 30 mins to days at a time, only paying for the hire time and distance you drive.
Mer have installed the new dual Electric Vehicle Charge Points, with one dedicated to the Car Club vehicle and the other available for personal EV use.
The Lagland Street electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the car club vehicle has been funded by developer contributions from the adjacent site.
Councillor Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy at BCP Council, said: “I’m pleased to see this new electric Car Club vehicle in place. Funded by a nearby development, it provides an option for those who need to drive occasionally, without the hassle of owning, parking and maintaining your own vehicle. Half of households in this part of town have no access to a car, and this sort of initiative reduces pressure on the limited parking that is available. There is another Co-wheels car located at Poole Station, and a dozen across BCP, we are hoping to expand their availability. We are also working to expand the public charging points across the town, as more residents and visitors make use of them.”
Richard Falconer, Head of Mobility, Co Wheels, said “We’re thrilled to expand our offering in Poole with the addition of a second electric vehicle to our fleet at Lagland Street Service Area. This marks another step in our commitment to providing sustainable, convenient and affordable transport options for the local community and supporting the Council’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. By offering a sustainable, shared transport option, Co Wheels is helping local residents reduce their environmental impact, ease congestion and move towards a cleaner, greener future”
Liz Warren, Director of Public Charging at Mer, said “Mer is delighted to have worked alongside BCP council, Joju Charging and Co-wheels in helping to meet the Council’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions and improving air quality. The provision of new EV charging infrastructure helps to ensure that the transition to EVs continues smoothly and improves public accessibility to these vital services.”
Joju Charging, said "Joju Charging is pleased to have worked with BCP council, Mer and Co-wheels to identify a charging solution which enables the council and Co-wheels to begin rolling out electric vehicles in their car club fleet. The new charger in the Lagland Street Service Area will provide one socket dedicated to the new car club EV and one for wider public use. The new charger will benefit existing EV drivers and also provide a great opportunity for those who haven't experienced the improved driving experience of an EV to give it a try without the expense of buying or leasing a vehicle. We are proud to be supporting the council's goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions and improve air quality for everyone."
