Co-wheels has been recognised amidst hundreds of social enterprises by making the shortlist for the prestigious Growth Champion of the year award from the SE100 index.
The SE100 is the lead growth index for the social enterprise sector. Each year, the Index presents awards to recognise listed social enterprises who have demonstrated some of the best business practice within the sector. Winners of each category take a share of a £30k prize fund as part of the award.
Currently rated number one on the Index for the transport sector, Co-wheels has been shortlisted in the Growth Champion category for this year due to our positive financial growth and sustainable business model. We have seen a growth percentage of 74.1% for the 2012-2013 financial year, and are ranked in the top 10% of our turnover category.
Co-wheels has grown organically, developing into a sustainable business with a fleet size of over 300 vehicles and with revenues in excess of £1.5m. Our robust model relies on traded income rather than grants. The past year has seen big expansion both in our service provision and in staff, bringing car clubs to new locations, and increasing our existing fleet.
As we continue to expand our successes, the reach of our social impact grows too, which is an important aspect of the Growth Champion award. Social inclusion is key to Co-wheels’ vision, and we consequently have a unique approach to car club provision, setting up and operating schemes in a diverse range of locations often seen as unviable by larger commercial operators. We are also proud to be the sector leaders in providing electric vehicles, operating over 50% of all electric vehicles in car clubs in the UK. Our holistic attitude toward tackling attitudes toward car ownership has led to us to include electric bicycles in our corporate fleet offerings, and now for public on-street hire - the only operator to do so.
